Money/Time/Parts are no object. Give me your idea for a killer sleeper.
Found another great sleeper (maybe someone has featured it here before, I don't know) that is super-Jalop. 2Jz Volvo 240.

take SRT4 Caliber take off the body kit, crank up the boost.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:15 |

Just the classic formula for me, twin boosted LS3 1992 Volvo 240 wagon in restored condition and modern suspension/brakes.
Or
1969 Fairlane 500 Fastback 7.3 Power Stoke Diesel swap.

Fairlane Power Stroke! That's a new one for me!

Ford Flex with a full RWD 662hp 5.8L supercharged V8 drive/powertrain swap from a 2013-14 GT500.

Find a old beat SC like I used to have, leave the exterior stock, but give it a 700+hp 2jz. Surprise the shit out of a lot of people.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:18 |

I would but someone already made it. V8 RWD Chevrolet Cavalier.

I'd cut the pipes off a v8 volvo s80 like the video they had on the FP months ago. I also want a VR6 swapped MkI Rabbit and a Hayabusa swapped Smart or mini. My favorite sleeper project though, would have to be a Saturn SC2 with a drivetrain swap from a Cobalt SS...
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:20 |

Take an early 90's Cavalier Sedan and throw in the 420hp 3.6L twin turbo from the Caddy XTS V-Sport and keep it FWD to keep it authentic.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:20 |
|
A 2JZ powered '86 Cressida. Bolts right in for the most part and nobody will ever suspect the boxy old sedan.
Something like this:
Only with more subtle body/wheel trim.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:21 |
|
That would be sexy.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:21 |

Oh so many! The one that's been on my mind would be a twin turbo 1gz-fe land cruiser. something like 700 hp 700 ft-lbs.
I drove around cleaning up the ricers with a 97 supercharged 454 suburban for a while...what a treat. The guy who did ours had a supercharged 502 crate engine in his with 11 lbs of boost. Holy hell that thing was scary. my guess is that he was pushing 600 hp and well into 800 ft-lbs.
I think a boosted to hell 3S-GTE 1st gen rav4 would be pretty entertaining.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:23 |

I had the same idea but went with the Cressida instead. Basically any car that can fit a 2JZ would work.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:25 |

Power Stroke Fairlane would be maniacally beautiful.

I once had a wonderful sleeper:
I miss my blue brick.
4.3L V6 bored 60 over, ported heads, cam, crank, upgraded valves, springs, rockers. Intentionally mild exhaust.
I was invited to drive it at the GM Proving Grounds while in college but I wasn't going to be in town for the week I was invited unfortunately. I had a friend with a connection over there and they wanted to see what it would do.
If I was building an ULTIMATE sleeper, I'd put a new LS V8 in one of these, keeping the exterior bone stuck with the exception of slightly wider rear tires.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:29 |
|
True, but with the SC300 the 2JZ is already in there. Just have to give it some booooost.
Cressida is definitely a good choice though …. I just miss that SC sometimes.

This is a tough one for me.
It would have to be a wagon of some kind. Actually, scratch that.
Take one of these
Add an LS9 & a T56
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:32 |
|
I had a '94 with the W-code 4.3 in high school/college. Man I loved that thing.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:33 |
|
'64 Lincoln Continental with a 427. Got the whole thing planned out already right here !
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:34 |

More seriously on the Sleeper though, probably a very built Magnum wagon, not unlike my own. Lightened (4600lbs is a lot), and a HEMI from Ray Barton converted to EFI, with a little bit 'o boost from some rear mounted turbos.
Wont be super quick off the line, but I'll be damned if it gets caught up in the mid to high end.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:35 |
|
Take a '68 LTD Country Squire, just like this:
Then add any HiPo Ford drivetrain. Preferably, the Supercharged 5.8L from the GT500. A 5.0 Coyote would work just fine too.
Or, you get a '88 Electra Estate Wagon, like this:
Then drop in any LS crate motor, mated to a Tremec 6-Speed.

Nah, an NA-T is different than a stock TT

my daily is a sleeper —-
no one would expect little ole 280z to have a 5.3 liter with a massive cam and T56 .. Last week (before my oil pan problem) I had a guy come up to me at the gas station and ask if it still has the L28 (stock motor) I told him no he asked and all I had todo was start it up and letter idle.

Ultimate sleeper :

That's crazy. Watching that feels like someone took Model A footage, sped it up, and dubbed a Cosworth soundtrack over it.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 12:50 |

Well yea its slightly different. But if you're going to build a 700+hp 2J, you're going to have to change a bunch of that stuff anyways.
My point really was the car is already made for that engine, so you don't have to fiddle with wire harnesses, engine mounts, adapters, etc.

Like this with MOAR BOOST

Or like this with a 1UZ/W58 combo. Maybe turbocharged if I'm feeling ambitious

Hmmm, I still think I'd go for GTE. If you're spending big money on an engine built, why not do it right? There are TONS of swap kits out there for this. The engine mounts are the same and the transmission bolts right up

Nice!
Mine was one of the first "Tahoes" by Chevy, it was a trim package for my S10. I think it got me the roof rack and running boards. And a logo on my glove box lol.
It was the back end of it with my giant Chevy sign that made people pull up and want to race though. I can't tell you how many little Civic's I left behind (and how pissed off the guy in the bmw 3 series was!)

Ford Fairmont Futura with the drivetrain and suspension from a 2014 Boss 302.
Chevy Lumina Monte Carlo body on an 05-06 GTO chassis.
Dodge Diplomat with a Hellcat under the hood.

That Model A is pretty interesting. It was completely rebuild and has huge number of really neat tricks. But they are well hidden. The suspension is totally reworked and it should handle pretty well. The wheels are billet aluminum wheel but they are painted to look like the original wood spoked wheels. The BDA engine goes up to 9000 rpm and has a misfiring function to sound like the original engine if needed.
It is owned by four time world rally championship winner Juha Kankkunen.

Hehehehe. //rubs hands gleefully
I'd take a Volvo 940 estate. Nice, big, geography teacher-esque car. Then it's time for an engine swap. Preferably an LS or a 2JZ with variable boost so it can be docile when I need to and enormously rapid when necessary. Weight reductions if possible, those old Volvos are heavy beasts. And then to make it less wobbly, Accuair air suspension - that big boot will have plenty of space for the compressor. Maybe AWD could also be possible. The come the armaments and defensive mechanisms to fend off other annoying road users...

I have this shirt, and I want to do it someday with a totaled Prius. Lower key though, with totally stock bodywork, widened steelies with stock hubcaps, and huge mufflers with electric cutouts so I can idle quietly & smugly at a stop, and nobody will suspect a thing... then open them up & scare the shit out of people with a Prius going RumpitaRumpitaRumpitaBWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA with the tires on fire on line-lock. This hybrid burns fuel AND rubber!

There was a Country Squire just like that for sale on local CL recently for stupid cheap. I wanted to do just that.

I read up on this a lot a few years ago, you know before I crashed it and assumed I'd have the car forever. But like I said a few years ago, so IIRC . If you're going north of 600hp and already have a GE there is no point of going to a GTE first. Anything you'd gain you would need to immediately toss out the window because now you'll need a stronger version of that.
The only difference in the blocks themselves are oil squirters and apparently, for reasons unknown to me, they become useless at high HP levels.

There's that obviously.
Also, a '66 Ford Fairlane wagon. Get a 2 door post hardtop, cut the b pillars out of both cars and turn the wagon into a 2 door. Then buy the 427 SOHC that my father had tucked away and stick it in there. Add a beefy manual, tubs and a big rear end. Maybe a 66 Mercury Comet front clip. Just to throw them a real curve ball. Does it count as a sleeper if no one knows what it is?
![]() 08/08/2014 at 15:06 |

Mine was a Tahoe, too. Loaded for a '94. Power locks/windows, shift-on-the-fly 4wd, keyless entry (still had two keys though, weird GM), power mirrors.
Other than some seriously over-matched rear leaf springs and notorious rocker panel rust, it was a really great vehicle.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 15:26 |
|
I had the power locks and windows, no keyless back in 88 though haha!
my 4wd was definitely NOT on the fly either! No power mirrors.
Didn't even have cruise control originally, we stripped it out of a 92 or 94 GMC Jimmy, man those a-holes changed every single wire color in those years so it became red matches yellow, black matches green, etc

You're right, Dantonio has got things humming pretty well there and Izzo is, well, Izzo. I like where the Hawks are, though, with Kirk and Fran.
![]() 08/08/2014 at 16:52 |
|
Really? I've heard some people not too pleased with Kirk.
always good to support your guys/team, but you don't always have to like the coach!(man I wanted John L Smith out SOO BAD)
Did you go to Iowa? Currently attend? Just a fan?
![]() 08/08/2014 at 17:05 |
|
I think most of the folks unhappy with Kirk got spoiled by a few closely spaced 10-win seasons about 10 years ago and now expect it all the time. Iowa just isn't a program that is set up to win that often. I'd love conference titles each year and BCS bowls (or playoff appearances now), but it's not a realistic expectation given the style of offense we run and the recruiting competition we have.
Lived my whole life in IA so I've been a Hawk fan since I can remember. I went Wartburg College, a little DIII school in NE IA.

ls9 aztek /thread
or if you want to be somewhat normal - cyclone motor into a GMC Astro van
![]() 08/11/2014 at 11:37 |
|
I see your recruiting issues, but both Iowa and MSU run a power offense, and it took us all the way to a rose bowl win. So it's possible, the people just gotta demand it.
Our Alumni complained because honestly we wanted winning seasons and to beat the a-holes in Ann Arbor. It just so happened that to be able to beat them we were able to beat most of the Big Ten lol. (and now they're terrible)

I'd add a padded roll-cage. Crash safety, etc. But it's a neat idea.
![]() 08/12/2014 at 19:52 |
|
That is a nice one. It's kind of surprising how many CL Cressidas are variations of that.
(Unbelievably long link involving autotempest national CL search results)
![]() 08/12/2014 at 20:18 |

If I add a roll cage then it's no longer a sleeper. I do agree that safety is important tho.
![]() 08/13/2014 at 21:43 |

The handling might be tricky. Full roll-cage freaking mandatory recommended.

Take one (1) Mini 850, early 1960s vintage.
At each wheel, install a compactly configured drive-train consisting of the movement works from a Ninja 250 motorcycle with the gearboxes servo-actuated and synchronized, operated by the driver with a pair of very shiny red buttons on the steering wheel.
